Elderly Relatives: How to Care for Them

Wishing happy birthday, we wish many years of life, thinking that our dearly loved person always will be what he is now. What if our dearly loved grandmother lives 96 years, but for seven years, she recognizes almost nobody? The life is long, but... did we wish it like that?

Measure of patience.

In the opinion of doctors (gerontologists), each person should be ready to get old someday. To be prepared for old age, it is necessary to learn to forgive; in old age, insults are splashed out from the subconscious and the person continues to remember them when all the others have already forgotten them. Besides, in old age, people’s negative features in youth now become aggravated; the malicious person becomes aggressive, the critic becomes the pessimist.

It is necessary to treat the elderly person more tolerantly. No one can be sure of escaping from the same disease in an old age. Many old men are slovenly, sluggish, sometimes whimsical, and sensitive, as children. However it is important not to pass the moment when the elderly relative becomes not just a simple burden, but also a real danger to his family and for all neighbors in general. The problem behavior appears not during one moment, therefore it is necessary to trace, as it progresses.

With bed patients, care is the basic efforts (change of linen, smell, washing, feeding), however they do not present a danger and do not irritate others with their behavior. About 50 % of old people suffering from mental diseases, are not only walking, but also active enough to be an irritant or even dangerous. In this case, they can not live easily with their family or any other associates. They can rave, show aggression, break things, fight, swear. If the person behaves like this, it is necessary for his relatives to think of psychiatric examination. It is impossible to stop such diseases as sclerosis and marasm because they progress, but only the doctor or psychiatrist can diagnose and prescribe treatment. He will correct the behavior of the patient or will send him to a hospital. There is no universal tablet which would remove aggression, make an old man inactive, or simply calm him. In each case, a specific treatment or medication is appropriate. It is impossible to give a sedative to an elderly person under your own initiative!

If your elderly relative has already entered into such stage of illness that you begin to worry for your safety and the safety of your children, think of whether you can have him at home. Contact the Department of Social Services. They will do a medical examination and depending on the results, will send him to the appropriate place. It’s no use calling directly to the homes for elderly people, as they receive patients with results from inspections by the Department of Social Services.

Other criterion for putting an old man in a home for elderly people is the question of how difficult it is to take care of this person. For example, if the elderly person is lonely and unable to look after himself, it is better for him to be in a hospital where he will be provided with proper care. The same can be said and in the case when the person is not lonely but unable to move, and hence, it’s difficult to take care of him.

As a rule, the personnel at the homes for elderly people treat them well. However, on one floor which is up to hundred patients with only one nurse, one junior nurse and one doctor. For this reason, they don’t have an opportunity to communicate to everyone, and as a result, old men have nobody to talk to. Therefore, those who live in the homes for elderly people suffer most of all from loneliness.

Sometimes, having placed their relative in a home for the elderly, a person may notice at visiting, that it is gloomy and he is depressed, but it is caused by the period of adaptation which everyone endures differently, depending on their character and the disease. For the elderly person, moving to another room is already an event, so imagine the move from the family house to the home for elderly people. The home for elderly people, in some respects, is even more preferable than the house. Here, the qualified medical personnel is always nearby, there is special equipment, beds from which it is impossible to fall. You do not have to be afraid that he will drop out of a window or will not switch off the gas. There, he will always be given meal on time, and a meal which is suited to his diet. The opinion that homes for elderly people are gloomy institutions with the peeled walls and broken furniture is not truth – well, not always the truth. In modern homes for elderly people, there are both TVs and decent furniture.
