Guidelines for the 7th Month of Pregnancy

Week 28

You are on the homestretch already – only three months are left before the birth of your child. Now it will seem to you that you are awkward and absent-minded. Your baby is accumulating hypodermic fatty tissue. He or she is active and you feel his or her movements very well. The baby is going to survive even if your childbirth occurs during this month.

Your baby:

It is the crucial stage in the development of the brain. The seven-month-old baby feels pain, and he or she reacts on it the same way a mature infant would. His or her skin is red and pursy but there is fatty tissue under it already. He or she has a lot of taste buds on his or her tongue (even more than after birth) and the baby can distinguish between really subtle shades of taste. His or her lungs are not completely formed yet and surfactant – a substance responsible for alveoli collapse while breathing - is not formed. Your husband can feel with his hand the baby’s movements, and can see the baby’s body contour when he or she is turning. The baby’s length is 37 cm and weight is between 900 g – 1 kg.

New sensations:

You may feel lethargy, which is characteristic of the late pregnancy period. Heart burn, indigestion, and spasms are common as well. It might be hard to breath. Due to metabolism intensification, you will be hot even when it is cool and you will sweat too much. Anemia is the norm during the last pregnancy trimester. Prolonged red spots may appear on your belly. Light uterine contractions may begin – these are false labor pains. As a rule, they are usually painless. You may have very vivid dreams of your baby or childbirth - these dreams are due to your uncomfortable position while sleeping or to your baby’s moves.

The way you look:

Veins on your breasts are more distinct. Fat tissue may form on the belly, thighs and legs. You may gain about 4 kg during the last three months. The optimal weight gain by week 28 is 9 kg.

You should be sure to rest in the afternoon and be sure to go to bed as early as possible. If you still have to work, sit during your lunch break while holding your legs horizontally. Have a good rest after coming home.

Fill-out a maternity leave application indicating if you are going to be back after the childbirth or not. Warn your boss 3 weeks before you leave.

During this time, if there are no complications, visit the doctor twice a month and ask him or her everything you are worrying about. The baby’s heart can be listened to by a regular phonendoscope.

Future mothers who are at risk of premature birth should avoid sexual intercourse during the last 2-3 pregnancy months. If there are many premature birth risk factors in your lifestyle, get rid of them:

  • stop smoking before pregnancy or in its very beginning;
  • do not have beer, wine or any other alcoholic drinks;
  • do not take any medication without your doctor’s approval;
  • pay attention to your weight gain;
  • zinc should be present in your diet (according to certain researchers, premature birth may be caused by the lack of it);
  • if your work requires daily standing for more than a few hours, quit it or stop;
  • avoid sexual intercourse during the last pregnancy months;
  • follow your doctor’s advice because you may have to stay at the hospital for some time for maintenance of your pregnancy;
  • if you have caught an infection (German measles, some venereal diseases, urinary and genital systems inflammation) that could be dangerous for the baby, then premature birth will rescue him or her from the harmful environment. To minimize the risk of contamination keep away from sick people, do more exercise and have more rest, have a balanced diet, and visit the doctor regularly. Many doctors advise the use of condoms in the course of the last pregnancy trimester to lessen the risk of intrauterine infection;
  • if you suffer from a function deficiency of the cervix (the state when your cervix opens prematurely), then you may have your cervix put in stitches around week 14 of the pregnancy. Or the doctor will insist on your staying at the hospital for pregnancy maintenance during the last trimester;
  • sensitive uterus. This feature may stir up premature uterus contractions. To lessen uterus contractions, some medicines can be taken;
  • Placental presentation (placenta is placed low, very close to the
