women like to smell the fumes of gasoline, acetone and other volatile
matters. Fortunately, this phenomena is rare. Is it necessary to satisfy
such desires? Certainly not! These desires are also caused by a "command"
of the same "searcher". If they are strong and constant it is
recommended to consult a doctor, since they are caused by neurochemical
changes in the body. Probably, the fumes of harmful substances somehow
influence the brain: in such a way that the body reacts to the changes
in balance certain chemicals. But a future mother should not satiate such
desires in any case. In fact, harmful fumes can have a mutilating effect
on the fetus. In such cases, doctors prescribe special prescriptions that
normalize certain chemical productions (glycine, glutamic acid, vitamins).
So, hormonal reorganization in the body strongly influences food preferences
(when a woman constantly wants one thing and can’t stand another).

eccentric hormones that run around the organism during the first three
months of pregnancy, provoke freaky predilections.”

Samuel M. Flacksman and Paul Sherman have declared, that the nausea,
vomiting and the changed food preferences during pregnancy carry out a
salutary function: it is the natural mechanism of protection for a mother
and a fetus from the diseases caused by improper food. It also protects
a fetus from harmful substances which can negatively affect the formation
of its organs and tissues. Their conclusion helps to explain why early
on many pregnant women begin to loathe meat, some vegetables and drinks
containing caffeine, and prefer products with an bland taste. According
to Sherman, by this mechanism of disgust for certain food, the fetus is
also protected from the toxins developed by microorganisms and other teratogenic
substances (causing defects of the fetus development).
At the same time, during the first three months of pregnancy the cells
of an embryo start to form structures. This is a critical stage in the
formation of a new life. The developing structures and systems - hands,
legs, eyes and the central nervous system – can be adversely influenced
by teratogenic substances contained in some plants; their components can
also have a negative impact on the course of pregnancy. For example, parsley
can cause contraction of the uterus, and lead to a miscarriage. It’s
not by accident that a pregnant woman’s body frequently refuses
spices.
INSTINCTUAL CRAVINGS
It is known, that tastes and desires of the pregnant woman vary. Nature
has supplied the future mother with a so-called "food intuition of
the pregnant woman". Modern dietology, medicine and biology don’t
have complete information regarding the perfect nutrition during preganacy.
We know only the main principle: the food should be varied, healthy and
contain a minimum quantity of processed and artificial products. During
the first trimester of pregnancy there is an active reorganization of
the body as it adapts to a new condition. Now the baby (through his mother)
expresses his needs demanding useful microcells, vitamins and nutrients.
Both mom and her family should take this into consideration and provide
the baby with the desired substances. However here, as anywhere, a reasonable
approach is pertinent. You should listen to your desires and satisfy them
reasonably (in moderate quantity).
So, whatever is hidden behind such strange desires of pregnant women,
it is necessary to listen to them and try to find out what deficiency
our "whims" are indicating. Scientists confess that some cases
of flavor preferences are unexplainable. And in any case, do not force
yourself to eat something that is considered to be good for you if you
do not want it.
