How Plants Effect Our Emotions ?

On the basis of special studies, it was stated that females prefer blooming plants of red color and males prefer plants of blue color. Children respond differently. In the ages of 4-10 years, the child is mostly impressed with red, purple, and rosy colors. At 10-12 years their favorite colors are green, yellow, and red. From 13 to 16 years the favorite

colors are blue, orange, and green. At 17-19 years old, tastes meet on a red-orange tonic coloration.


In some countries (England, for example) certain recommendations are worked out for using blooming plants inside the house. Thus flowers of bright red color (carnation, peony, tulip, phlox) influence excitement and are recommended to be placed into the room during morning exercises: they help to wake-up, vitalize all functions of the body, increase muscles tension for a short time, raise blood pressure, and speed up respiratory rhythm. It is believed that flowers of rosy coloration (rose, aster, gillyflower, pelargonium) avert melancholia. It is recommended to have within your house flowers of orange color (calendula, nasturtium) which also have a tonic effect, improve digestion, aid against depression and apathy, and contribute to weight loss.


If you have intensive intellectual and visual work, then it is good for you to have flowers of yellow and aurulent coloration (golden ball, chrysanthemum) in the room. This is because the yellow color is the lightest, physiologically optimal, less wearing on the eyes, and less likely to incite nervous activity. The flowers of orange and yellow coloring might be used in any premises.


House plants create positive emotions, particularly in the winter. In addition to this, the green color is the most habitual for our eyes and physiologically optimal as well. Green foliage increases muscle efficiency for a long time and prevents hypertension. More than that, it relieves migraines (the disease which nowadays even preschool children have) due to vascular distention and calms down neuralgia. A composition of flowers with blue and light blue shades (cornflower, bell-flower, forget-me-not) slow down nervous system functions, decrease muscle tone, decrease blood pressure, and reduce pulse and breath. They go well together with exercises of quieting autotraining in the rooms for phychophysical relief after work. This results in faster muscle relaxation, sound sleep, and recovery of work efficiency. The flowers of comforting coloration (light blue and blue) are generally recommended to have where passive recreation is required -- for instance, in a bedroom.


One more thing about house greenery: scientist S.V.Kravkov stated that if a human being is influenced with green light, then its intraocular pressure goes down and infilling of retina arterial vessels improves. All of these benefit the eyesight and reduce eye fatigue, which is important for those people whose activities require strong visual tension. Have your children look at green plants more frequently during relaxation time.


Finally, the plants of purple color (for instance peonies) close the spectrum. They join the shades of red and violet, inciting various effects. This is especially true of flowers with deep coloration contrasts such as bright peonies and asparagus greenery.


You should not forget that house plants are our “lungs” as well: they clean the air from dust and toxic impurity, make it fresh, and disinfect it by means of phytoncides (volatile antibacterial matter) which they emit.


One additional note –- try to place house plants in such a way that daylight is not restricted. This happens most when the plants occupy all the windowsills. Generally speaking, everybody knows this but it will be worth an extra reminder.
